As the Senate HELP Committee prepares to consider S.2658, S.1954, and S.3014, the Center for Innovation and Free Enterprise respectfully urges lawmakers to consider the gravity these proposals will have on medical innovation.
While framed as efforts to increase competition and lower costs, these bills would weaken intellectual property protections that are essential to the development of new medicines. Of particular concern is the Medication Affordability & Patent Integrity Act (S.2658), which would make it more difficult for innovators to protect legitimate medical advancements and improvements that benefit patients.
America’s leadership in biopharmaceutical innovation is built on a patent system that rewards risk-taking, investment, and discovery. Weakening that system threatens future breakthroughs and reduces incentives to pursue lifesaving research.
We encourage the Committee to reject these proposals and instead pursue policies that promote both innovation and patient access without undermining the intellectual property framework that makes medical progress possible.
